Leaders & Managers
Leadership is something quite different to management.
A successful CEO needs to create a vision and inspire people to work towards the vision, whilst keeping momentum going along the journey; a useful acronym is “V I M”
Leadership is primarily about the first two of these, Vision & Inspiration.
Management is about the second two; some Inspiration and mostly Momentum.
Employees are often promoted for being good managers - hitting targets, budgeting well, dangling the carrot and wielding the stick. But that’s all about keeping momentum up, not about being a leader and when they are asked to lead they often will not know what to do differently. Leadership Coaching helps people to realise that successful leadership is mostly about doing things differently – that is what really inspires people to perform.
Creating opportunities for others and not taking any of the glory, setting a personal example that others can aspire to, creating a vision that everyone believes in, being seen to do the right thing in a crisis. These are inspiring.
Continual focus hitting targets and fine detail are not inspiring (though clearly still important).
So what qualities must a good leader display?
- Gravitas, so that your team believe that you can help them
- You have to have led people/be worldly so that they respect you
- You must know what makes people tick so that you can figure out the best way to work with any particular team member
- Creativity, so that you can challenge staff members to do different things and take risks to achieve their objectives
- Great listening skills
- A non-judgemental, relaxed and patient style, so as to not irritate your staff by judging their mistakes
Your role as a successful leader is to figure out how to “bottle” their natural skills and develop them as strong individual and team players.
The Pharos Leadership Programme helps you to understand, develop and deliver your leadership qualities – creating sustainable change for you, your staff and your organisation.
